Translations of the Bible into Albanian language have appeared since the 18th century.

Overview

The first known translation of the New Testament into Albanian is the so-called Elbasan Gospel Manuscript. The manuscript was written in 1761, probably the work of Gregory of Durrës, the Metropolitan (archbishop) of the Archdiocese of Durrës.

In 1821 Vangjel Meksi completed the translation of the New Testament into Albanian, which was posthumously published in 1827.

Since 1857, Kostandin Kristoforidhi published a series of translations of the New Testament and other Biblical books into Albanian.

In 1980 the Catholic priest Simon Filipaj published another translation of the New Testament and in 1994, after the fall of the Communist regime, the first edition of the whole Bible in Albanian; see Shkrimi shenjt: Besëlidhja e Vjeter dhe Besëlidhja e Re (1994 Filipaj), book.
