Hugh J. Schonfield (1901-1988) was a British Jewish scholar.
Biography
Born in London and educated at St. Paul's School and Glasgow University, Schonfield dedicated much of his work to the study of the Middle East, composing works on the Suez Canal and Libya which appeared in the Encylopaedia Brittanica and Islam Today. Schonfield was also interested in archaeology, Christian origins, as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls. His best-known work was the controversial Passover Plot, a popular work which is said to have even influenced John Lennon of the Beatles. In 1959, Schonfield was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his services towards international harmony (biographical information taken from Proclaiming the Messiah [1997]).--Isaac W. Oliver
