Translations of the Bible into Russian

Overview

There is memory of two translations of the Bible in Russian. The first by Franciscus Skorina (1490-1541), was made in Belorusan dialect around 1525 ('Bilblia Ruska"). The second, by Ernest Gluck, was completed at the end of the 17th century but the manuscript was lost in 1702.

  • 1823 -- First version of the NT in Russian by the Holy Synod.
  • 1876 - Publication of the whole Bible by the Holy Synod (based of the original hebrew texts)

No translation of the Bible was made during the Soviet period, until the reconstitution of the Russian Biblical Society in 1990.
