According to Christian tradition (Gospel of Luke and the Protoevangelium of James), Elizabeth was the wife of Zacharias and the mother of John the Baptist.
Overview
The Gospel of Luke narrates the miraculous birth of John the Baptist from Zacharias and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is also present is the episode of the Visitation of Mary.
In the later Protoevangelium of James Elizabeth also plays a role in the Massacre of the Innocents, where she and her son were miraculously hidden by God.
