Studied at the Universities of Berlin and Tübingen in Germany (1913–14) and at the University of Geneva in Switzerland (1915). Held a pastorate in Sanborn, New York, from 1916 to 1919.  Hired as Professor at Harvard in 1922.  Author in 1949 of one of the most influential introductions to Second Temple Judaism.
