As one of the leaders of the Pharisees in the 1st century and the teacher of Paul of Tarsus, Gamaliel is present in numerous films.
Gamaliel first appeared in 1939 in the British television adaptation of the 1933 Passion play Caesar's Friend by Campbell Dixon and Dermot Morrah. It was the first play of biblical subject even broadcast on television. The BBC aired two other live productions of the play in 1947 and 1954. Gamaliel is however absent in all major movies focusing on the Passion of Jesus, with the only exception of The Color of the Cross (2006).
More commonly, Gamaliel is introduced in relation with Paul of Tarsus, starting with the Life of Paul Series (1949-51), or in films focusing on the development of the early Christian movement immediately after the death of Jesus of Nazareth.
