Bassus was prefect of the fleet stationed at Ravenna. In the Year of the Four Emperors he deserted [[Vitellius]] for [[Vespasian]]. In 71 CE the new Emperor assigned him the task of liquidating the last strongholds of resistance in Judea, after the fall of Jerusalem. He besieged and conquered [[Herodium]] in 71 and [[Machaerus]] in 72. On his way to [[Masada]] however, he fell ill and died, and was replaced by [[Lucius Flavius Silva]].
