Lucilius Bassus was a Roman military commander and governor of Judea, 71-72 CE.
Overview
Bassus was prefect of the fleet stationed at Ravenna. In the Year of the Four Emperors he deserted Vitellius for Vespasian. In 71 CE the new Emperor assigned him the task of liquidating the last strongholds of resistance in Judea, after the fall of Jerusalem. He besieged and conquered Herodium in 71 and Machaerus in 72. On his way to Masada however, he fell ill and died, and was replaced by Lucius Flavius Silva.
