"Repeatedly inspired in the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid rulers, Jewish insurrection was a constant in Roman times. In the mid-1st century CE, a rebel from Nazareth named Jesus was arrested like many other dissidents had been before him and was then crucified by Pontius Pilate, the Roman governors of Judea. Shortly after his death, Jesus became a legendary figure and came to be depicted as Rabbi, as a miracle-doer, as a Messianic prophet, as Israel's Messiah himself, and finally as God's Son. Non-confessional historiography, however, should carefully distinguish between the mythical and historical elements used to depict him in the earliest extant sources, in which such elements are rather frequently intertwined. It should help us examine afresh, no matter if in a polemical manner, Jesus' political commitment and reconsider such prominent figures as James, who was Jesus' carnal brother and, in fact, the leader of the earliest Christian community."--Publisher description.

Jesús, el galileo armado: Historia laica de Jesús <Spanish> / Jesus, the Armed Galilean : A Lay History of Jesus (2007) is a book by Josep Montserrat Torrents.
