Francis E. Peters was born June 23, 1927 in New York, NY.
He studied at St. Louis University (BA 1950, MA Latin & Greek 1952), and Fordham University (Russian language, 1956), earning his PhD from Princeton University (Islamic Studies 1961). Now emeritus, he was a professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and History at New York University from 1961.
