Overview

The Third Enoch Seminar was held in Camaldoli [Italy] on "Enoch and the Messiah Son of Man."

The Third Enoch Seminar at Camaldoli signaled the determination of the promoters to strengthen the seminar format of the meeting and focus on the analysis of specific texts. The format now included for the first time the presence of an inner circle of specialists and discussion groups open to all participants.

The conference was organized by the University of Michigan (Dept. of Near Eastern Studies) and the Michigan Center for Early Christian Studies, in collaboration with the Camaldoli Order, and the Jewish Community of Florence. It focused on the ideology and date of the Parables of Enoch as a Second Temple Jewish document and on its message about the coming of the heavenly Messiah Son of Man.

10 papers (and 12 short papers) circulated in advance and were discussed at the conference in plenary sessions and three discussion groups, at the introduction of 10 respondents. In attendance were 43 scholars from 11 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America). Among the newcomers: Daniel Assefa, Jonathan Ben-Dov, Daniel Boyarin, Charles Gieschen, Robert Kraft, Hindy Najman, Gerbern Oegema, Daniel Olson, Andrei Orlov, and Michael Stone, and Pieter Venter.

The Proceedings of the Third Enoch Seminar were published in 2007 by Eerdmans; see Enoch and the Messiah Son of Man (2007 Boccaccini), edited volume.
