The Kingdom of God and the Son of Man (1938) is the English edition of Reich Gottes und Menschensohn (1933 Otto), book. Translated from the German by Floyd V. Filson and Bertram Lee Woolf.

Abstract

"In 'Reich Gottes und Menschensohn', translated by Floyd Filson and Bertram Lee-Woolf as 'The Kingdom of God and the Son of Man', Otto's eschatological theology reaches its maturest expression, as he applies his broad understanding of the history of religions to Christology and Eschatology. He explains the use of the term 'Son of Man' rather than 'Messiah', showing the paradoxical equivalence of the Son of Man and the suffering servant, whilst also making a powerful case for Iranian influence in the development of early Christian eschatology. Otto considers here how Jesus's 'messianic self-consciousness' helps explain the Kingdom of God as being both present and imminent - a 'realized eschatology'. Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was Professor of Theology at Marburg University and one of the leading German theologians in the first half of the twentieth century. His theological work influenced leading European intellectuals ranging from C.C. Jung, C.S. Lewis and Mircea Eliade to Martin Heidegger, Aldous Huxley and Hans-Georg Gadamer, as well as having a profound impact on generations of theologians."--Publisher description.
