St. Paul and the Church of Jerusalem (1925) is a book by Wilfred L. Knox.

Abstract

Combining a narrative style with extensive footnotes, Knox seeks to reconstruct an account of the apostle Paul’s life during the period of time in which he was in contact with the original Church in Jerusalem. His sources include Paul’s letters written to converts in Galatia, Thessalonica, and Corinth, an occasional reference to Rabbinic Literature, and the book of Acts. Indeed, one of Knox’s tacit goals is to argue for the historicity of the book of Acts and its usefulness for historical reconstruction. His more explicit goal, however, is to explore the tensions between the Original Church in Jerusalem and the Fledging Christian communities of the Diaspora—particularly in regards to Jew/Gentile relations—and how the apostle Paul himself at times instigated these tensions and at other times sought to conciliate them. Related to this, Knox also examines to what extent Paul’s teachings are like his predecessors and how much they represent a new development in Christianity. The book should be credited for its extensive footnotes and its exploration of text critical matters, especially related to the Bezae Codex. – Deborah Forger, University of Michigan
