Simon ben Boethus was the Jewish High Priest from around 23 to 5 BCE.
Overview
Around 23 BCE Simon ben Boethus was appointed by Herod the Great as the new High Priest to succeed Joshua ben Phiabi.
Simon ben Boethus was the father of Herod's wife Mariamne II and served almost twenty years as High Priest. He was removed when Herod divorce from his wife, for her alleged participation in the plot of Antigonus II against his father.
Simon ben Boethus was succeeded by Matthias ben Theophilus.
The House of Boethus however remained a very influential presence for their wealth and their family connections with the Herodians. During the first century at least five High Priest belonged to the family. The influence of the House of Boethus was counterbalanced only by the powerful House of Annas, which the Roman governors especially favored, after they took direct control of Judea. At the end the leaders of the two Houses, Ananus ben Ananus and Joshua ben Gamaliel respectively, found themselves united during the Jewish War in the struggle against the Zealots and together perished at the hands of the Ithureans.
