Mariamne II was the third wife of Herod the Great, the daughter of the High Priest Simon ben Boethus, and the mother of Herod Boethus.

Overview

Mariamne II was the daughter of Simon ben Boethus, a Jewish Aaronite from Alexandria. Herod took Mariamne II as his third wife and granted her father the High Priesthood. Herod and Mariamme II had a son, Herod Boethus, who married his niece, Herodias, and by her had a daughter, Salome.

In 4 BCE Herod divorced Mariamne II and removed Simon ben Boethus on the charge of their involvement in the alleged plot of Antipater II against Herod. Herod Boethus was removed from the line of succession to the throne but survived the purges as he lived in Rome as a private citizen.

For their common family connections, the priestly House of Boethus remained a favorite among the later Herodians, who appointed several of its members to the High Priesthood.
