Category:Joshua ben Phiabi (subject)
Joshua ben Phiabi was the Jewish High Priest, 30?-23? BCE, under Herod the Great.
Overview
Joshua ben Phiabi succeeded Ananel as the High Priest appointed by Herod the Great, around 30 BCE. The policy of Herod was to replace periodically the High Priest, whose office was no longer for life as it happened under the dynasties of the Zadokites and the Hasmoneans. For the first time the High Priest in Jerusalem co-existed with former High Priests. The goal of preventing the establishment of a dynasty would remain a constant concern under Roman rule, although some families (notably, the House of Boethus and the House of Annas) managed to have many of their members appointed as High Priests.
Around 23, Joshua ben Phiabi was succeeded by Simon ben Boethus.
