The École Biblique et Archéologique Française at Jerusalem played a central role in the discovery and early study of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Already in the Spring 1949, Roland de Vaux conducted a preliminary excavation of Cave 1. Then in November 1951 he began a full excavation of Qumran and the surrounding area, which through several expeditions was concluded in 1956.

Since 1953 the Palestine Archaeological Museum became the center for the study of the manuscripts. Roland de Vaux was appointed the director of the International Team of specialists who first studied the Dead Sea Scrolls and the , Józef T. Milik, Dominique Barthelemy, and Jean Starcky also joined the International Team.

In France Andre Dupont-Sommer and Jean Carmignac were the leading scholars of the period. They all supported the Essene hypothesis and yet their forceful personalities made them often engage in sharp debate.

On May 25-27, 1955 the first international conference of Qumran Studies was held in Strasbourg, France.

In 1957, Józef T. Milik offered the first general assessments of ten years of research on the scrolls.

In 1958 Jean Carmignac founded the Revue de Qumran, the first journal to specialize in the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

After the death of Roland de Vaux in September 1971, Pierre Benoit succeeded him as editor-in-chief of the International Team and the DJD series.

In 2004 the Séminaire Qumrân de Paris was founded by Francis Schmidt, currently directed by Christophe Batsch.
