Biography

Mladen Svicer (Mladen Schwitzer / Steven Switzer) was born May 9, 1934 in Zagreb, Croatia, to Artura Svice and Frida Roman. In May 1941 the family fled to Susak, Dalamatia (then under Italian occupation). In April 1942 they were sent to Sondrio (Aprica). The managed to escape to Switzerland in September 1943.

Steven Switzer (né Mladen Schwitzer), born on May 9, 1934 in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now in Croatia), discusses his family and early childhood in Zagreb; going with his family in May 1941 to Susak, Italy (Sušak, Croatia), where they stayed until April 1942 when the Italian government sent the Switzers by train to Aprica, Italy; leaving Aprica in the middle of the night with 120 people and going to the Swiss border where they waited for approval to enter Switzerland; being granted approval and placed in a camp for refugees; being placed with the Mueller family in St. Gallen, Switzerland in December 1944; staying with the Muellers until June 1945; staying with another family in Flawil, Switzerland until September 1945; leaving Switzerland with his family; living in Milan, Italy; and his family’s immigration to the United States in 1949.
