Matilda Joslyn Gage

Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826-1898) was an American political activist and suffragist, Gage played a pivotal role in the movement for women's right in 19th-century America. She strongly supported the separation between Church and State and radically opposed the various Christian Churches for their oppressive role against women. Although not an academic, Gage was also a well-educated scholar and writer. In her historical survey of the many ways in which Christianity had oppressed women and reinforced patriarchal systems, she singled out Paul of Tarsus as an intolerant and anti-woman author.
