Lex Mahumet pseudoprophete <Latin> / Law of Muhammad the False Prophet (1143) is a manuscript by Robert of Ketton.

Abstract

First edition of the Qur'an in Latin, commissioned by Peter the Venerable to promote the religious conversion of Muslims to Christianity. In spite of its poor quality and anti-Islamic bias, Robert of Ketton's translation, first printed by Theodor Bibliander in 1543, was the standard version of the Qur'an known in Europe until the 17th century. All European editions and translations of the Qur'an were based on this text, until L'Alcoran de Mahomet (The Alquran of Muhammad / 1647 Du Ryer), book and Alcorani textus universus (1698 Marracci), book offered better translations of the original Arabic.

Editions

The text widely circulated in manuscript form, until it was first edited and published by Theodor Bibliander in 1543.
