Joseph Smith (1805-1844) was an American visionary and the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. Born December 23, 1805 at Sharon, Vermont. In the late 1820s, he said that an angel had directed him to a buried book of golden plates, of which he published in 1830 the English translation (the Book of Mormon). Smith devoted the rest of his life to the building of the new Church of Christ. He died June 27, 1844 at Carthage, Illinois, the victim of a mob riot. The Book of Mormon traces the origin of some ancient inhabitants of America to the lost tribes of Israel after the Babylonian exile. It also describes the visit of Jesus to the Americas shortly after his resurrection and ascension.
