Il giudaismo illustrato nella sua teorica, nella sua storia e nella sua letteratura <Italian> (1848-1852) is a book by Samuel David Luzzatto.

Abstract

The first volume is a general introduction to Judaism as a monolithic system of thought, first taught to Abraham and his family and later adapted by Moses to become the law of a nation. The first volume also includes one of the very first surveys of Jewish literature in Italy. The second volume, titled Lezioni di storia giudaica, is actually a social history of the Jews in the Second Temple period, from the Babylonian exile to the reign of Nero. Luzzatto uses essentially Josephus and classical sources, giving equal credibility to Talmudic narratives of the period. The 21 lessons were delivered in 1830-1831 to the students of the Collegio Rabbinico of Padova and mark the beginning of Italian Jewish scholarship on the period in modern times. -- Gabriele Boccaccini, University of Michigan
