Biography

Frieda Einsiedler (later Frieda Stieglitz) was born May 30, 1933 in Grodzisko Dolne (near Leżajsk), Poland. Daughter of Efraim and Gittel Susswein. Father emigrated to the United States before the war. Mother and the three children did not have time to join him. Frieda was the only one to escape deportation and death. She wandered alone until a Polish family of farmers took good care of her. Approximately four months before the entry of the Soviet army, she was hosted in a Polish convent in Przemysl. She described the nuns as being “very kind” and stated that, although all the children were taught religion, the nuns did not press the Jewish children to become Catholics.

She died June 11, 2011.
