Die Schöpfung <German> / The Creation (1798) is an oratorio by Joseph Haydn (mus.), and Gottfried van Swieten (libr.). Text based on the Book of Genesis and on portions of Paradise lost by John Milton.

The oratorio was published in a German-English bilingual edition.

Editions, performances

The first performance of The Creation took place privately in Vienna, Austria: Palais Schwarzenberg, 30 April 1798. Composer Antonio Salieri played the continuo part, while Haydn directed the massive ensemble of singers, chorus and orchestra. The first public premiere occurred at the Vienna Burgtheater on 19 March 1799.
