Des Jona Sendung / Jonah’s Mission (1909) is the German version of Joonase lähetamine (Jonah’s Mission / 1907 Tobias), oratorio, by composer Rudolf Tobias.

"An oratorio in a Prologue and Five Scenes."

Rudolf Tobias’s oratorio Joonase lähetamine ("Jonah’s Mission"), later named Joonas ("Jonah"), is a landmark of Estonian classic music via the Vardo Rumessen’s version.

Editions, performances

The German revised ed. of the oratorio was completed by the composer in 1909 and first performed in Leipzig, Germany the same year. In 1986-89 Vardo Rumessen reconstruct the score and the oratorio was performed again on 25 May 1989 in the Estonia Concert Hall.

It was first recorded in Tallin, Estonia: Estonia Concert Hall, Tallin, 23-29 June 1995

World premiere recording -- Pille Lill (sop), Urve Tauts (mezzo), Peter Svensson (ten), Raimo Laukka (bar), Mati Palm (bass) -- Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir -- Tallinn Boys' Choir -- Ines Maidre (organ) -- Estonian State SO/Neeme Järvi.

In 2018 the original 1907 Estonian version was first performed in Tallin, Estonia: St John’s Church, 7 June 2018; and Tartu, Estonia: St Paul’s Church, 8 June 2018.
