Simon Cantheras ben Boethus , of the House of Boethus, was the Jewish High Priest, 41-42 CE, under King Herod Agrippa I and Emperor Claudius.

Overview

Simon Cantheras was a member of the House of Boethus. Not surprisingly, he was the first appointment of the Herodian King Agrippa I when he was granted the kingdom of Judea in 41 CE by the Roman Emperor Claudius.

Simon Cantheras succeeded Theophilus ben Ananus of the House of Annas, but the fact that members of the House of Annas, traditionally favored by the Romans, and members of the House of Boethus, traditionally favored by the Herodians, regularly alternated during the reign of Herod Agrippa, signals the search of a balance.

In 43, Simon Cantheras was succeeded by a member of the House of Annas, Matthias ben Ananus.
