KZ Curzola (Dalmazia)

Overview

An Italian internment camp for Jewish refugees (including families and children) from Yugoslavia. After The armistice in Sep 1943, many refugees were able to safely reach southern Italy and freedom.

  • Sonia Backmann / Sonia Alaimo (1927)

Sofia Backmann was born Jun 16, 1927 to Jakob and Maria Backman. Sonia and her mother fled novi Sad to Korcula in 1941. Sonia’s father, Jakob, was interned until late 1941 and then also came to Korcula, an island in Dalmatia under Italian occupation. After Sept 1943, they were then sent to Italy where the family remained until they came to New York in 1947.
