John the Baptist & Jesus of Nazareth

Overview

Subplots

Child John the Baptist with Jesus

Luke's Infancy narrative establishes a close connection between the Birth of John the Baptist and the Birth of Jesus of Nazareth, claiming that their mothers, Elizabeth and Mary were sisters. According to Christian traditions, the two cousins met during their childhood. Many portraits of the Holy Family include the Child John. Less frequent are the representations of meetings during their boyhood, that John the Baptist was said to have spent in the desert.

Baptism of Jesus

The two "cousins" met again on occasion of Jesus's baptism.

Here Is the Lamb of God

John the Baptist is told to have explicitly recognized Jesus as the Messiah and the Lamb of God, and have encouraged his disciples to follow him.

Messengers from John the Baptist

When in prison, John the Baptist is told to have sent some of his disceple to ask him if he was the Messiah.

Question about Authority

Jesus praised John, claimed that his authority was from God.

Question about Fasting

The disciples of Jesus (together with the Pharisees) fast because they wait for the coming of the Messiah. The disciples of Jesus do not fat because they believed that the Messiah (the bridegroom) had come.
