Herod of Chalcis was a member of the Herodian dynasty.
Overview
Herod of Chalcis was the son of Aristobulus IV and Berenice I. His paternal grandparents were Herod the Great and Mariamne, while Salome I and Costobarus were his maternal grandparents. He was thus related to both the House of Herod and the House of Hasmoneus. His siblings were Herod Agrippa I, Herodias, Mariamne III and Aristobulus Minor.
He first married his cousin Mariamne IV, the daughter of Herod's daughter Olympias. From this union came Aristobulus of Chalcis, who married Salome, the daughter of Herodias, and the widow of the tetrarch Herod Philip.
After the death of his first wife Herod of Chalcis married his niece Berenice, daughter of his brother Herod Agrippa I, in 41 CE. The couple had two sons, Berenicianus and Hyrcanus. As a marriage gift for her daughter, Herod Agrippa I obtained that the emperor Claudius granted Herod the kingdom of Chalcis. Three years later, at the death of Agrippa I, Herod was appointed governor of the Temple, with the right of nominating the high priest. During the time in which he exercised this right he appointed two High Priests--Joseph ben Camei (44 CE) and Ananias ben Nebedaeus (46 CE).
Herod of Chalcis died 48 CE and his young widow Berenice went to live at the court of her brother Herod Agrippa II. She would play a very important role in first-century Jewish history.
