Good Shepherd

Overview

In the ancient Jewish tradition, God is often portrayed as a Good Shepherd who takes care of his people.

This imagery was not unique to Judaism. It was often used in pagan cults (see Orpheus, Hermes, etc.).

The Christian tradition would apply this imagery to Jesus who becomes the Good Shepherd who searches for the Lost Sheep and takes care of the believers. The early Christian iconography would reused pagan imagery and apply it to Jesus.
