Alexander Kohut (1842-1894) was a Hungarian Jewish scholar. Alexander (Yedhuda Chanoch) Kohut was born on April 22, 1842, at Kiskunfélegyháza, Hungary. He received his PhD from the University of Leipzig in 1866 and his rabbinic diploma in 1867. A specialist in Rabbinic Studies, Kohut became a religious and political leader of Hungarian Jews. In 1885 he moved to the United States where he associated with Sabato Morais in founding the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York. Kohut died on May 25, 1894, at New York.
