Aristobulus Minor was a member of the Herodian family.
Overview
Aristobulus Minor was the son of Aristobulus IV and Berenice I. His paternal grandparents were Herod the Great and Mariamne, while Salome I and Costobarus were his maternal grandparents. He was thus related to both the House of Herod and the House of Hasmoneus. His siblings were Herod Agrippa I, Herod of Chalcis, Herodias, and Mariamne III.
After his father was executed by Herod the Great in 7 BCE, Aristobulus Minor was sent to Rome where he was educated by Tiberius alongside his son Drusus and future emperor Claudius, of whom he became a close friend.
Aristobulus married Iotapa, a Syrian Princess from the royal family of Emesa. The couple had only a daughter who was deaf and mute.
Aristobulus chose to live the life of a private citizen. He was not involved in political affairs, except for his opposition to the attempt of Caligula to set up statues of himself in the Temple of Jerusalem.
