Crawford Howell Toy (1836-1919) was an American scholar.

Biography

Born in Norfolk Virginia. Studied at the University of Virginia and the University of Berlin. Professor of Hebrew at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1869-1879) and Harvard (also lecturer of biblical literature). Influenced by Darwin and shaped by Wellhausen and the religionsgeschichte school, his critical approach to the New Testament eventually caused a rift between Toy and the Southern Baptist Seminary.
