Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674) is an Icelandic poet.

Biography

Hallgrímur Pétursson is Iceland's most famous poet. Born at Hólar, he ran away as a boy and left Iceland with merchants. Some years later he attended seminary in Denmark and returned in Iceland as a Lutheran minister and preacher.

He authored several works of secular and religious poetry, including the celebrated Passíusálmar, an account of Jesus' Passion.
