Stefan Heym

Stefan Heym (pseudonym for Helmut Flieg; 1913-2001) was an German Jewish novelist.

Biography

Helmut Flieg was born April 10, 1913 at Chemnitz [Poland], then part of the German Empire.

Between 1935 and 1952 he lived in the United States, serving in the American Army during World War II.

A committed socialist, he moved back to then East Germany in 1952 where he continued his literary work in spite of increasing tensions with the regime. In the 1980s he supported the democratic movement toward German reunification.

He died December 16, 2001 at Ein Bokek, Israel while visiting the country for a conference.
