Cristo Redentor de los Andes / Christ the Redeemer of the Andes (1904) is a colossal sculpture by Mateo Alonso.
Abstract
The colossal bronze statue of Christ the Redeemer was commissioned by the bishop of Cuyo, Mons. Marcelino del Carmen Benavente, and first displayed in the patio of the Lacordaire School of the Dominican Order in Buenos Aires. As tension mounted between Argentina and Chile over a border dispute, Argentinian Christian activist, Ángela Oliveira Cézar de Costa, proposed to erect a statue of Christ the Redeemer to remind the parties of Christ's message of peace. As the border dispute came to peaceful resolution, the statue was moved to the pass of Cumbre del Bermejo and inaugurated on March 13, 1904
History and current location
The statue is located at the pass of La Cumbre, the highest point on the old road connecting Mendoza in Argentina and Santiago de Chile.
