Cornelius Cornelii a Lapide (Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen; 1567-1637) was a Flemish scholar.

Biography

A Jesuit and NT scholar, Cornelius a Lapide was born at Bocholt [Belgium] on December 18, 1567.

He studied theology at Douai and Louvain, entered the Jesuit order in 1592 and was ordained a priest three years later. He taught Scripture at Louvain, 1596-1616, and then at the Roman College, 1616-1636.

His knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, Latin, theology, classical philology and Church history made him one of the greatest interpreters of the 17th century. A lively and popular lecturer, he wrote a commentary to all books of the Christian Bible (including OT Apocrypha), except Job and Psalms.

Cornelius died in Rome in March 1637.
