The category: Spanish Scholarship, includes (in chronological and thematic order) works by Spanish Scholars, in the field of Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins. It also includes works by non-Spanish scholars, translated into Spanish.

General Overview, Navigation Guidelines, and Scholarly Cooperation

  • Spanish scholarship on Second Temple Judaism and Christian Origins comprises a wide range of subjects of interest such as the historical Jesus and Christian beginnings, the canonical New Testament and the New Testament Apocrypha, Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, the literature of the Targumim, the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, the Greek versions of the Bible, Josephus, and Philo.
  • Begining with Juan Martín Cordero's and Benito Arias Montano's translations of Josephus in the mid-16 century, it includes many relevant contributions such as Alejandro Díez Macho's editio princeps of Targum Neophyti 1 between 1968 and 1979, and Florentino García Martínez's 1992 Spanish translation of the Qumran scrolls, which was also the first translation of these ever published.
  • Brief Overviews of each period are given below (century-by-century overviews up to the 21st century plus decade-by-decade overviews from the 1900s onwards).
  • Partial Statistics Tables are also included after each century-by-century and decade-by-decade overview to show the subject rankigns of each period: they comprise (a) books by Spanish scholars originally published in Spanish, (b) books by non-Spanish scholars translated into Spanish, and (c) books by Spanish scholars originally published in other languages different from Spanish by number and subject; (d) the total number of books published in and outside Spain in each period is also provided.
  • Then follows a 1900s-2010s General Statistics Table which offers (a) a survey of all subjects dealt with and all books produced by decade, (b) two complementary subject rankings by scholars and publishers, respectively, and (c) a general subject ranking.
  • Two separate lists, the first containing the names and websites of the leading Spanish centres for scholarly research in Second Temple Judaism, Christian Origins and other related areas of specialization, and the second the names and websites of the leading Spanish publishers in the field, are appended immediately after the General Statistics Table.
  • Related Categories such as Spanish Scholars, Spanish language, and Spanish Fiction are also provided after these.
  • In turn, individual chronological links to all titles published from 1478 to 2011 are provided at the bottom of the page. Only books, translations, and edited volumes are mentioned; selected articles in academic journals will be included in the future.
  • Periods with no apparent scholarly production (e.g. the 19th century or the 1920s) are intentionally left in blank.
  • Blue links correspond to now active entries; red links, to still non-active entries which will be, nonetheless, created and developed in the future.
  • Please kindly inform the editor of this page (segoviamail@gmail.com) of any missing references (whether books, translations or edited volumes either published in Spain or by Spanish scholars) you may notice.
  • Visit the Spanish Scholars page for information about these; Spanish Scholars are there included, first, by area of specialization, and then in chronological order.
