Publius Petronius was the Roman Governor of Syria, 39-41 CE, under Caligula.

Overview

In 39 CE Caligula appointed Publius Petronius Governor of Syria to succeed Lucius Vitellius. During Petronius' tenure, Marullus was the governor of Judea and [[ the High Priest in Jerusalem.

The same year in which Petronius was appointed, Caligula ordered that a statue of himself be placed in the Temple in Jerusalem. Petronius, who was responsible for erecting the statue, faced mass demonstrations by Jews of the region and managed to delay construction of the statue until the death of Caligula in 41 CE.

The new Emperor Claudius appointed Gnaeus Vibius Marcus the new Governor of Syria.
