{fr} Visages d'enfants / {en} Faces of Children [1] (France, 1925), directed by Jacques Feyder, starring Jean Forest.

A man whose wife has died remarries, and his new wife has a daughter of her own from a previous marriage. The man's young son, however, who loved his mother deeply and misses her terribly, resents his father's new wife, not wanting her to take the place of his beloved mother, and makes life miserable for his new stepsister.

Swiss boy Jean Amsler is inconsolable when his mother dies. His father is also in mourning, but eventually remarries a woman who already has a daughter of her own. Neither his father nor his new stepmother understand the depth of Jean's grief, or the hurt that the various changes to the household are causing him. Finally, Jean plays a trick on his stepsister, hoping to get her into trouble - but it goes horribly wrong, and she nearly dies. Jean's remorse is met simply by his parents' brooding silence and contempt; and eventually, feeling unloved and rejected, Jean decides to run away...
