Lina Cavalieri

Lina Cavalieri (1874-1944) was an Italian opera singer. She performed Salome in the New York premiere of Massenet's opera at the Manhattan Opera Theatre on 9 November 1909. The first American production of Massenet's opera was at the New Orleans Opera in 1892, starring Marthe Duvivier. In January of 1909 the Manhattan Opera had staged a celebrated production of Richard Strauss's Salome, with Mary Garden. Manhattan Opera capitalized on the "Salomania" of those years, taking advantage of the fact that their rivals of the Metropolitan Opera had banned any Salome performances. The new production of Massenet's opera was also presented in Philadelphia.
