Constantin-François Volney

Constantin-François Volney (1757-1820) was a French scholar, philosopher, historian, orientalist, and politician. Studied Classical languages and spent some years in the Middle East to learn Arabic. Back in France, was professor of history at the newly founded École Normale and became a member of the Académie française in 1795. Was with Charles François Dupuis one of the early proponents of the Jesus Myth Theory, of which he offered a more moderate version, allowing for confused memories of an obscure historical figure to be integrated in the Christ mythology.
