José de Acosta (1539-1600) was a Spanish scholar and theologian, a Jesuit missionary in South America and a naturalist. His Historia natural y moral de las Indias (1590) is one of the first and best descriptions of the New World and its inhabitants. He also taught theology at Ocana, Rome and Salamanca.
