Johann Ludwig Burckhardt

Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817), known in England as John Lewis Burckhardt, was a Swiss scholar and explorer. Traveled extensively in the Middle East. In 1812 rediscovered the ruins of Petra.
