Olive Fremstad

Olive Fremstad (1871-1951) was a Swedish-American opera singer. In 1907 she was Salome at the Met premiere of Strauss' opera. Accusations of vulgarity and indecency led to the cancellation of the show within days. The opera would not be performed again at the Met until 1934, but thanks to Fremstad (and her double, dancer Bianca Froelich) almost overnight the "Solomania" spread in every corner of America.
