Abstract
The only choreography of Spartak (1954 Khachaturian), ballet music made outside Russia. Hungarian choreographer László Seregi rearranged Aram Khachaturian's score changing the order of some scenes and modifying the scenario, following Howard Fast's novel rather than Spartaco (1873 Giovagnoli), novel. Among the new personages is "Gad, a Judean gladiator."
Choreographed for the Hungarian State Ballet in 1968, Seregi's work entered the repertoire of the Australian Ballet on October 26, 1978, when Seregi became artistic director of the company from 1977-84. It was was the first full-length ballet by a Central-European choreographer to be staged for an Australian company.
