Otto E. Neugebauer (1899-1990) was an Austrian American scholar. One of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, was also an expert in ancient Middle Eastern languages and the leading specialist in the history of astronomy in antiquity. Born in Innsbruck, Austria, Neugebauer studied at the Universities of Graz, Munich, Göttingen, and Copenhagen. When Hitler rose to power in 1933, he moved to Denmark, and after the country was occupied by the Germans in 1939, to the United States.
