Martin Lings / Abu Bakr Siraj Ad-Din (1909-2005) was a British scholar. Martin Lings Lings was born January 24, 1909 in Burnage, Manchester, England. After graduating at Oxford University in English, from 1939 to 1952 Ling lived in Egypt where he learned Arabic. Back to the United Kingdom, Lings earned a BA and a PhD in Arabic from the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London). He was the author of popular books on Islamic Studies and Shakespeare. Lings died May 12, 2005
