The 'Sistine Chapel is the main chapel of the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the Pope in the Vatican City.
The chapel was built in the 14th cent. During the reign of Pope Sixtus IV, the internal walls were decorated in 1480-82 by a team of artists including Pietro Perugino, Sandro Botticelli, and others, with a cycle of frescoes illustrating the lives of Moses and Jesus.
Later, under the patronage of Julius II, Michelangelo decorated the ceiling in 1508-12 with a cycle of Biblical stories. Finally, in 1535-41, Pope Alexander III commissioned Michelangelo's painting of the Last Judgment on the Altar Wall.
