A first unsuccessful military campaign in Egypt in 351 BCE led to rebellions in Cyprus and Sidon, that Artaxerses brutally repressed.

In a second campaign in 343 BCE Artaserses III regained control of Egypt, the region would remain under Persian control until the invasion of Alexander the Great.

In 338, Artaxerses III was poisoned by one of his vizirs, Bogoas, who installed Artaxerses' son, Arses, as the new king.
